Funded in 2020, SciencEscape is a non-profit association based in Geneva, officially recognised as being ‘of public utility’ and specialised in science outreach and communication.

Our aim is to share science with the widest audience possible through audiovisual content. We are professional filmmakers, but above all scientists still involved in research in natural sciences. As such, we quickly understand scientific contexts and can communicate key messages to the general public.

Tracking the footsteps of the Archosaurs in Émosson

Tamara El Hossny, a PhD student in paleontology, introduces us to the site of Haqel, an exceptional fossiliferous deposit located a few kilometres away from Beirut. Among the fossils discovered at this site are Cretaceous fish that Tamara studies in detail at the Natural History Museum in Geneva (Switzerland). She explains to us why this site is important to understand the evolution of life but also for the study of past climates. Pierre, from the Abi-Saad family, fossil hunters for 3 generations and owner of the Haqel site, shares his excavation work with us as well as the family museum in Byblos where more incredible specimens are on display. Dr. Lionel Cavin, paleontologist at the Museum of Natural History in Geneva, explains the history of the collaboration between Switzerland and Lebanon concerning the study of Lebanese fossils, which notably began with the work of the famous Geneva naturalists Aloïs Humbert and François-Jules Pictet De La Rive in the 19th century.

This documentary highlights an outstanding scientific expedition conducted in Iceland by a team of volcanologists from the University of Geneva. In March 2021, in the midst of the COVID crisis, the volcanologists were in a hurry on the Reykjanes peninsula to study the strong seismic crisis related to the spread of magma in the earth's crust. On the program: earthquakes, a historical eruption, sublime landscapes, and especially science accessible to all!

The Cumbre Vieja eruption, La Palma – Scientific documentary produced by SciencEscape in collaboration with the University of Geneva.

This short documentary follows a team of volcanologists from the University of Geneva (UNIGE) as they head to the 2021 Cumbre Vieja Eruption on the Island of La Palma, Spain. Working alongside the local INVOLCAN observatory, who was monitoring the evolution of eruption, the UNIGE volcanologists focused more on sampling and analysing the ash and lava flows which can then be compared against historical eruptions. The scientists explain how investigating the mineral and glass content of the fossil and current lava will offer better insight into how eruptions of this type evolve.

In the heart of the Swiss glaciers – Scientific documentary following work of glaciologists from the University of Lausanne, Switzerland.

Shaped by mother nature over millennia, glaciers are essential for biodiversity, climate and represent an immense freshwater resource. Seriously threatened by climate change, they are now the subject of study by many scientists around the world, especially in Switzerland where the Alps are full of them. This short documentary follows geoscientists as they use ground penetrating radar to image the internal structure of the Tsanfleuron glacier, in the Glacier 3000 resort (Switzerland). This research project has global implications with regards to glacial water supply and to the dynamic evolution of glaciers under the influence of climate change.

When the Sahara was green – Interview of the Prof. Sébastien Castelltort about his recent research carried out in the Sahara Desert. Over the last four years, the Dr. Abdallah Zaki and the Prof. Sébastien Castelltort collaborated at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Geneva (Switzerland). They studied ancient riverbeds in the Egyptian Sahara and discovered that 10 000 years ago the climate was much wetter and forced people to migrate away from the Nile valley into what are today desert lands.

The interview took place at the Terrascope (University of Geneva) and was led by Dr. Chloé Pretet from Animuse in the scope of the ClimatiZENs project which, with the support from the Swiss National foundation, aims to provide teachers with tools to transmit the complex notions and facts about the Earth's past climates. This video is therefore intended to be broadcast in Swiss schools, as a support for a scientific collaboration exercise proposed to young students as part of the ClimatiZENs project.
