An immersive CUSO course
Where science meets storytelling — following PhD researchers on the slopes of Mount Etna as they explore one of Europe's most active volcanoes while learning to transform scientific research into compelling documentary filmmaking.
ABOUT the film
Set against the spectacular landscapes of Mount Etna, this documentary follows a unique science communication initiative led by doctoral researchers from the University Conference of Western Switzerland (CUSO), with mentorship from SciencEscape throughout the creative process.
Alongside volcanologists and local experts, the participants explore the geological processes shaping Etna, the natural hazards associated with volcanic activity, and the close relationship between local communities and this constantly evolving environment. As they investigate this impressive volcano, they learn to transform complex scientific concepts into accessible and engaging stories. From the classroom to the field and finally to the editing room, they discovered the fundamentals of visual storytelling: cinematography, interviews, sound recording and editing.
Far more than a training program, this experience offered a true behind-the-scenes immersion into scientific communication.
